How to use the house layout planner
Arrange rooms, circulation, openings, and furniture in a whole-house 2D floor plan. The planner starts with a 3-bedroom, 2-bath, single-storey layout that you can edit to fit your project.
- Review the starting plan and its area, room, bedroom, and bathroom summary.
- Select and edit walls, then rename rooms as your layout develops.
- Use the Furniture panel to add furniture and arrange it inside the rooms.
- Add or adjust doors and windows with the toolbar or keyboard shortcuts.
- Use Inspect to review selected plan elements, and use Trace image or My plans when those panels fit your workflow.
- Press F to fit the plan, M to measure, and Ctrl+Z or Ctrl+Shift+Z to undo or redo changes.

Example: revise the starter house
A homeowner opens the planner and keeps the 40 x 35 ft starter layout. The initial summary shows 1,400 sq ft, 7 rooms, 3 beds, and 2 baths. They rename rooms, move walls to change circulation, add furniture from Furniture, place doors and windows, and use Inspect to review selected elements. They press F to fit the complete plan before checking the revised arrangement.
How the planner works
The canvas is a 2D wall-and-room editor. Rooms are detected from the wall layout, and their areas are measured to wall centre-lines. The summary adds the detected room areas and displays total square feet, room count, and bedroom and bathroom counts inferred from room names. The starter template uses a 40 x 35 ft outer layout. Its outer wall ring is set to 6 inches; interior walls use the planner's default thickness rather than a separate 6-inch setting.
Reading the results
Use the canvas as the main result: it shows the current walls, rooms, openings, and furniture. The summary beside Starting layout updates with total area, room count, and bedroom and bathroom counts. Room areas are based on wall centre-lines, so they are planning measurements rather than finished inside dimensions.
Limitations and common mistakes
- The displayed area is measured to wall centre-lines, not to finished interior surfaces.
- The bedroom and bathroom totals depend on room names. Renaming a room can change those counts if its name no longer includes “bed” or “bath.”
- The starter plan's 6-inch wall setting applies to the outer wall ring only. Interior walls use the planner's default thickness.
- The planner shows a layout concept. It does not establish structural, zoning, accessibility, or building-code approval.
