Editorial policy

Useful, accurate and honest about what we know. These are the rules we hold ourselves to.

Originality and usefulness

We publish a guide only when it adds something a reader cannot get from the first page of search results: a worked example, a calculator, a dimension table, an original diagram, a checklist or a clear comparison. We do not publish near-duplicate pages aimed at keyword variations.

Research and sources

Claims about materials, costs, building practices and standards are backed by sources listed at the end of the guide, with the date we accessed them. We never invent quotes, studies, standards, test results or customer experiences. Cost figures are presented as typical US ranges with the date they were compiled, and we say when they vary by region.

Use of AI

Language models help with research summaries, outlines and first drafts. Nothing is published automatically: every draft passes automated quality checks (sources present, no duplication, readability, no unsafe advice) and then a human editor reviews, verifies and approves it. Guides that were drafted with AI assistance are marked as such in our records and edited to the same standard as any other.

Safety-related content

Instructions touching structure, electrical, plumbing, gas, roofing or anything with a life-safety dimension get an additional review and always point readers to licensed professionals and local codes. US building codes are referenced where relevant, with the note that adoption and amendments differ by jurisdiction.

Calculators

Formulas are documented in the open on each tool page. Default constants come from published trade practice and are adjustable. Each calculator has automated tests against independently worked reference values, and we do not publish a tool before those tests pass.

Advertising and affiliates

Commercial relationships never influence what we recommend. Sponsored content, if any, is labeled as such. Affiliate links are disclosed on the page where they appear. We do not display fabricated ratings or prices we cannot verify.

Freshness

Every guide carries a last-reviewed date. Guides are re-reviewed when readers report issues, when underlying prices or standards change, or on a rolling schedule.
