How to use the room materials editor
Swap floor materials, wall colors and ceiling colors on a saved or demo floor plan. Use the 3D preview to inspect each room, then review an editable material estimate for the selected room.
- Select a saved plan or demo plan from the Plan menu.
- Choose a room from the Room menu.
- Pick a Floor material and a Wall paint color.
- Use Paint mode to change all walls together or edit each wall separately.
- Change the Ceiling colour and orbit the 3D preview to inspect it.
- Adjust the cost ranges and painting option if you want a room estimate.
What to enter
- Plan
- Choose a saved plan from this browser or one of the available demo plans. Use the reload button to check for newly saved plans.
- Room
- Select an enclosed room from the plan. The menu shows each room's area in sq ft.
- Floor
- Choose one of the available floor material swatches. The selected room uses its existing floor material until you choose a different one.
- Wall paint
- Choose a preset color or enter a valid six-digit hex color. Colors can be applied to all walls or changed wall by wall.
- Paint mode
- Choose All walls to apply one color to the selected room, or Wall by wall to edit each room-facing wall side separately.
- Ceiling colour
- Choose a preset or custom hex color for the room ceiling. The ceiling is easiest to inspect by orbiting below ceiling height.
- Lower walls to 5 ft for a better view
- Turn this on to temporarily cut the displayed walls to 5 ft. It changes the preview view, not the room or estimate.
- Floor price per sq ft
- Edit the low and high floor-price range for the selected floor material. Values start with that material's default range and accept increments of $0.05 per sq ft.
- Painting
- Choose DIY or professional painting rates for the estimate. Each option has its own editable low and high rate.
- Include ceiling
- Include or exclude the ceiling area from the paint estimate. The ceiling color remains available in the 3D preview either way.
Compare materials in one saved room
Select a saved floor plan, choose the living room, and switch the floor to a different material. Set Paint mode to All walls and choose a preset color, then change to Wall by wall to give one wall side a custom hex color. Turn off Lower walls to 5 ft to inspect the full walls, orbit the model to look at the ceiling, and adjust the floor and painting price ranges to match your quotes.
How the preview and estimate work
The editor converts the selected floor plan into a 3D scene. It displays room floors, two paintable sides of each wall, windows, ceilings, and available furniture. Floor and wall changes are stored separately for each selected plan during the session. The estimate uses the selected room's floor area in sq ft multiplied by the low and high floor rates. Paint uses the room-facing wall area after doors and windows are subtracted. If Include ceiling is on, the ceiling area is added before multiplying by the selected DIY or professional low and high painting rates. The displayed total is the floor range plus the paint range, shown as whole-dollar currency.
Reading the results
The 3D preview updates as you choose materials and colors. The estimate shows a low-to-high total with separate floor and paint rows. The paint row identifies whether it uses DIY or professional rates. Floor and paint rates are editable, so the estimate is a planning range rather than a fixed quote.
Limitations and common mistakes
- The editor needs an enclosed room in the selected plan. If a plan has no enclosed rooms, close the walls in the floor planner first.
- The Lower walls to 5 ft for a better view option only changes what is visible in the preview; it does not change the cost calculation.
- The estimate does not calculate gallons, coats, primer or paint waste. Use the linked paint calculator for those details.
- Saved plans and their material edits are browser-based. A plan that cannot be read may be skipped, and changing plans keeps overrides separate by plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my own floor plan?
Yes. Save a plan in the floor planner, then select it from the Plan menu. The editor also includes demo plans.
Can I paint each wall a different color?
Yes. Set Paint mode to Wall by wall. Each listed wall shows its length and paintable area, and has its own preset or custom color controls.
Does the ceiling color affect the paint estimate?
Only when Include ceiling is enabled. The ceiling color itself is available in the 3D preview regardless of that estimate setting.
What areas are included in the paint estimate?
The estimate uses the room-facing side of each wall, with doors and windows subtracted. It adds the ceiling area only when Include ceiling is selected.
Can I change the material prices?
Yes. Edit the low and high Floor price per sq ft values and the low and high painting values. The controls start with the material or labor option's default range.
