How to use the room furniture checklist

Choose a room type and size tier to get a practical furniture checklist. Each item is marked essential, recommended, or optional and includes typical width, depth, and height in inches and centimetres.

  1. Choose Feet / inches or Metres / cm.
  2. Select the room under Room to furnish.
  3. Choose the room size tier under Room size tier.
  4. Select Build checklist to view the prioritized list and typical dimensions.
  5. Check the listed pieces with the clearance and spacing calculators before buying.

What to enter

Measurement system for room dimensions
Choose Feet / inches or Metres / cm. This checklist uses a preset size tier rather than entered room dimensions. Furniture dimensions are shown in both inches and centimetres.
Room to furnish
Choose living, bedroom, dining, or office. The default is living.
Room size tier
Choose small, medium, or large. The default is medium. Each room type has its own floor-area thresholds.

Reading the results

The summary shows the number of essential, recommended, and optional item entries, along with the selected room tier. The detailed list is ordered by priority and shows each item's typical W × D × H dimensions. Some entries include a quantity, such as two nightstands or dining chairs. Notes provide room-specific guidance, such as rug placement or when a wardrobe is useful.

Limitations and common mistakes

  • The tool does not ask for room length, room width, doors, windows, or existing furniture, so it does not confirm that the full list will fit.
  • The size tiers use preset floor-area ranges and examples. They are not a measurement of your actual room.
  • Typical dimensions are common US retail sizes. Confirm the exact product dimensions before ordering.
  • The essential, recommended, and optional labels are checklist guidance, not a room-layout calculation. Check clearances and circulation separately.
