How to use the vinyl flooring calculator
Estimate how much vinyl flooring to buy for a rectangular room. Choose boxed vinyl plank or sheet vinyl, enter the room size and product details, and get the quantity with waste included.
- Choose the Unit system: Feet / inches or Metres / cm.
- Enter Length and Width, including any plus inches or centimetres. You can enter Or a known area for plank flooring instead.
- Set Product to plank or sheet. Enter Coverage per box for plank, or choose the sheet vinyl Roll width.
- Adjust Waste % and add Price per box (optional) or Include underlayment if needed.
- Review the boxes, sheet area, linear material, cost, and underlayment rolls shown in the results.
What to enter
- Unit system
- Choose Feet / inches or Metres / cm. Imperial is the default.
- Length
- Room length. The default is 12 ft in imperial mode or 12 m in metric mode.
- plus inches
- Add inches to Length in imperial mode, or centimetres in metric mode. The default is 0.
- Width
- Room width. The default is 10 ft in imperial mode or 10 m in metric mode.
- plus inches
- Add inches to Width in imperial mode, or centimetres in metric mode. The default is 0.
- Or a known area
- Optional floor area. It uses sq ft in imperial mode or m² in metric mode and overrides Length × Width for plank flooring. Sheet mode uses Length and Width instead.
- Product
- Choose plank or sheet. The default is plank. Plank uses cartons; sheet uses material cut from a roll.
- Coverage per box
- Coverage printed on the carton. The default numeric value is 24 sq ft in imperial mode or 24 m² in metric mode. It applies to plank flooring.
- Roll width
- Sheet vinyl roll width. Choose 6 ft or 12 ft; 12 ft is the default. These choices remain feet-based in metric mode.
- Waste %
- Extra material for cuts and waste. The default is 10%. Enter a value from 0% to 50%.
- Price per box (optional)
- Optional non-negative price for each box. The calculator adds a material cost for plank flooring; sheet mode does not use this value.
- Include underlayment
- Turn this on to estimate rolls of underlayment for the purchase area. The default is off.
- Underlayment coverage per roll
- The default numeric value is 100 sq ft per roll in imperial mode or 100 m² per roll in metric mode.
Reading the results
For plank, Boxes to buy is the whole-carton quantity after waste. The results also show the floor area and Area to purchase. If a price is entered, Material cost equals whole boxes × price per box. For sheet, Linear feet off the roll shows the material length needed after waste. Its unit is ft in imperial mode and m in metric mode. Sheet vinyl purchased shows the roll area to buy in sq ft or m². The results also show the selected strip count and any underlayment rolls.
Limitations and common mistakes
- Sheet mode calculates from Length and Width. It does not use Or a known area.
- Price per box (optional) produces a cost only for plank flooring. Sheet mode does not calculate a sheet-vinyl price.
- The Product input controls the mode and accepts plank or sheet. A separate value named Format does not switch the calculation.
- The calculator models a rectangular area. Irregular rooms, separate rooms, pattern repeats, and extra cuts may require additional planning. Coverage defaults are unit-sensitive: 24 means 24 sq ft in imperial mode or 24 m² in metric mode, and the underlayment default is 100 sq ft or 100 m² respectively.
