How to use the room shopping list builder
Build a room-by-room shopping list for furniture, decor, materials, and other purchases. Add quantities, prices, stores, priorities, and statuses while tracking the planned total against an optional budget cap.
- Enter a list name and an optional budget cap.
- Add an item, choose its room, and enter the quantity and unit price.
- Add a store name or an http(s) link, then set the priority and status.
- Add items to existing rooms or create a new room.
- Review the totals, then export a CSV or JSON file, print the list, or share it.
What to enter
- List name
- Names the list and starts as “Living room refresh.”
- Budget cap (optional)
- Enter a dollar amount. It starts at $0, which means no cap is active. A positive amount shows the amount remaining or the amount over the cap.
- Item
- Enter the item name, such as Floor lamp. New items start blank.
- Room
- Choose an existing room for the item. The first item starts in Living room. Blank room names are grouped as Unassigned.
- Qty
- Enter a whole-number quantity. New items start at 1. Use 0 for an item that is not currently needed.
- Unit price
- Enter the price for one item in US dollars. It starts blank, and blank prices are counted as not priced yet.
- Store or link
- Enter a store name, note, or web address. Only http(s) addresses are shown as clickable Open link links.
- Priority
- Choose Must have or Nice to have. New items start as Must have.
- Status
- Choose Idea, To buy, Ordered, Received, or Returned. New items start as To buy.
- Add an item to a new room
- Enter a room name, such as Bedroom, and select Add to create the first item in that room.
Reading the results
Room panels show each room's subtotal and its items. The sidebar shows the list total, Ordered / received, Must have, and Nice to have amounts. With a positive cap, the main amount changes to Remaining under cap or Over cap by, and the Planned vs cap bar shows the comparison. Returned items are excluded. Blank prices are listed separately as not priced yet. The list can be exported as CSV or JSON, printed, shared with a link, or reset to the default list.
Limitations and common mistakes
- Prices are whatever you enter; the tool does not estimate missing prices or add tax, delivery, or other fees.
- A blank unit price is not included in dollar totals, even though the item remains on the list.
- Returned items are excluded from room subtotals and all summary totals.
- The list accepts up to 400 items, and each saved quantity must be from 0 through 10,000. A budget cap of $0 is treated as no cap.
