How to use the home decor project planner
Plan a room update with tasks, owners, dates, statuses, budget lines and inspiration links. The planner also shows task progress, spending totals and a Monday-start timeline.
- Enter a project name.
- Add a task for each job, then assign an owner, date and status.
- Add budget lines with an estimate and enter an actual amount when that line is paid or priced.
- Save product pages, articles or boards under Inspiration links.
- Use Share link, CSV, JSON or Print to save or send the plan.
What to enter
- Project name
- Name the project. The starting name is “Bedroom makeover”; names can be up to 120 characters.
- Task
- Enter a job such as “Order curtains.” New tasks start blank and can contain up to 160 characters.
- Owner
- Enter the person responsible for the task. This starts blank and allows up to 60 characters.
- Date
- Choose a calendar date for the task, or leave it blank if it is not scheduled. Dates place tasks into the weekly timeline.
- Status
- Choose To do, In progress or Done. New tasks start at To do.
- Item
- Name a budget item such as paint, lighting or curtains. New lines start blank and allow up to 120 characters.
- Estimate
- Enter a nonnegative amount in US dollars. New lines start at $0.
- Actual
- Enter the actual amount in US dollars when available. It starts blank; a blank actual amount is not included in spent totals or paid-line variance.
- Label
- Name an inspiration link, such as “Curtain ideas.” Labels can contain up to 120 characters.
- URL
- Paste a web address, up to 2,000 characters. Use an http:// or https:// address to show the open-link button.
Reading the results
Tasks done shows the number of completed tasks over the total. The Progress bar shows the rounded completion percentage. Budget (estimate) includes all budget lines, while Spent (actual) includes only lines with an Actual amount. Variance on paid lines is positive when those paid lines cost more than their estimates and negative when they cost less. Weeks planned is the number of timeline weeks currently displayed. Use CSV for task and budget rows, JSON for the planner data, or Print for a printable task and budget summary. Your plan is saved in this browser. Share link creates a link for the current plan; opening a shared link does not replace your saved copy until you edit it.
Limitations and common mistakes
- The planner does not look up prices or calculate labor, tax, shipping, waste or other project costs. Enter your own prices or quotes.
- A task with no usable date is represented only by an undated-task count, not by a separate title, owner or status list.
- The timeline is capped at 26 weeks. When the dated span is longer, dated tasks in later weeks remain in the task list but do not appear in the timeline.
- The saved copy is browser-specific. Clear browser storage or use Reset and the saved plan may no longer be available on that device.
